That is the whole phrase. It exists because of a limitation, not because anyone thought it was good design.
Why platforms force it
On Instagram and TikTok, a caption cannot contain a working link. You can type a URL but nobody can click it. The only clickable link most accounts get is the single field on their profile — the bio.
So creators write "link in bio" and hope people make the journey: read post, tap profile, tap link. Every step loses people.
Why one link became a page of links
You have more than one thing to send people to. A shop, a highlight reel, a fundraiser, a sponsor. But you get one link field.
That is where link-in-bio pages came from. The link in your bio points at a page, and that page holds all the other links. Linktree built a large business on exactly this.
Where to actually find it
On Instagram, tap the person's profile picture or username to open their profile. The link sits under their bio text, usually in a different colour. On TikTok it is in the same place, though not every account can have one.
If someone says "link in bio" and there is no link, they have forgotten to add it. It happens constantly.
What a good one should do
Most link pages are a list of buttons and nothing more. That is fine for a shop. If you are an athlete, it wastes the moment.
Someone tapped your profile because they were interested. A brand doing the same thing wants to know three things: who you are, how many people you reach, and what you have actually done. A row of buttons answers none of them.
A link-in-bio page is not a menu. It is the first impression a sponsor gets of you — and it should be able to answer their questions without them having to ask.
The one thing worth doing today
Whatever page you use, put the real URL in your bio and check it works on someone else's phone. I have lost count of the profiles I have opened where the link was broken, expired, or pointing somewhere the person forgot about.
